18th August 2011 A busy day of photograph taking.

18th August - just 5 days of brick building and already it is starting to look like a house rather than an industrial building. I am getting used to the bricks now, they looked very contrasting to the grey block to begin with.

Rear of house towards back door
I have been in touch with the Electric suppliers Scottish Power and had an inspection survey visit done and now have to pay for installation of the cable down the lane to the property. The ground workers already layed the 32mm casing around the building to where the electricity meter will be. The cable is then passed through the casing into the meter box.

The back door and meter box space.

We have looked at sola-tubes for the bathrooms up stairs as they have no windows for natural light.
The idea behind the sola-tubes is that the sunlight hits a dome on the roof and reflects down a tube made of reflective material and amplifies the light into darkened areas.

We have also looked at windows and would like to go with tilt and turn windows and tri-fold doors on the 2 x 2400mm openings. Our chosen colour is grey outside and either white or a naturally light wood on the inside.

We are looking at getting some new'ish type floor joists called posi-joist floors by Pasquill. They are ready built to architects plan off site and brought already built,

Our blocks were slightly lower in energy efficiency than the ones on our sap calcs so instead of going for a c rated window we will go for A rated energy.

We are also looking into having a heat recovery and ventilation system fitted. This will hopefully transfer some of the heat from the south east side of the building to the rest of the house. (in the summer the sunshine will pour onto the south side and in the winter the wood burning stove will be on the same side churning out heat. The idea is to draw the moisture from the warm air then re-distribute it around the house.)

12th August 2011 - THE FIRST BRICKS GO ON>>>>>

Max looks on as mortar is layed onto the damp proof membrane in readiness for the first Red brick to be layed.

Piers manages to make a short appearance just in time to see the first brick being layed.

First brick is tapped into position.

The first of 12,000 to be layed.
I went away and out for 2 hours and below is how it looked when I got back.

The South West wall and the back of Steven, plenty of insulation there to keep our home nice and warm.

11th August 2011

This day was spent stacking the bricks around the plot in readiness for building and adding the insulation all around.

10th August and the bricks arrive on a very large lorry!!!!!!!!!

Nearly lost this one!!

The space on the plot is reducing by the minute.
